What a great opportunity to learn more about the Paris I love, and French food which I do not prepare at home. I wait for my trips. I am not intimidated with the snooty waiters, as I did my "homework." I'm prepared to ask questions about loaves and wine and anything else. The set-up of the chapters was easy reading, too. I trusted the writers. I discovered more secrets in Paris via their investigations and risky ventures. I didn't have to suffer the frustrations of getting lost on the metro nor the pains of tusseling with those Parisian cabbies. I especially enjoyed the trips to the new and modern Paris as described by Paul Goldberger. Do you want to loaf with a loaf, drink a bottle away from the bottlenecks? Read this book. Also, I will read other books in the Modern Library Food series based on my enjoyment of Ruth Reichl choices.

It has been a long time since I have found a cookbook as "user-friendly" and fun to work with as Mindy Ganz Ribner's Fresh from the Kitchen. We received it as a gift and it's been a family hit from the first day in our home. Although the author seems to gear the book to less experienced cooks, some of the recipes are not all that simple and it is here that Mindy really shows her stuff. The language is clear; the instructions are comfortingly explicit (including some great illustrations); and you are made to feel as if the author is standing right next to you in the kitchen, ready with both tips and encouragement. The mark of any cookbook is what ends up on the dinner table and we have yet to be disappointed. Although geared to the kosher-observing public, this book includes international dishes along with more traditional, ethnic foods. So far our favorites include: vegetable roulade with mushroom sauce, ground-beef soup, rosemary chicken, chicken livers in wine sauce, glazed corned beef, oriental baked fish, cheese blintzes, yerushalmi kugel, tabbouli salad, marinated peppers, challah and the incredible apple pie. The kids loved Brooklyn's best meat sauce, noodles a la George, vegetable tacos, muffins and two great and easy-to-make cakes, chocolate and marble, which introduced them to the joys of baking. This cookbook makes a great gift, but don't forget to put yourselves at the top of the list. As for our family, we eagerly await the next volume.

The Starving Students' Cookbook: The Classic Guide for the Clueless Gourmet!



This is a great book for the "starter" cook, which even though I bought this a few years ago, I still am due to laziness. There's a handy list of things to buy so that you can have a decently stocked pantry, and I used that when I went off to college. I appreciate the simpleness of the cooking, and that it shows you how to make your own salad dressing, sauces, etc. This is pretty much "cooking edible things" for dummies. The only thing I didn't have great success with was cooking sauces by microwave. The strangest 'tip' was to use your sink as a punch bowl...I don't know anyone that would drink from that. In all, this isn't a book for people with 'sophisticated' taste buds, just people who want to eat something decent (good but not great) that's homemade. It's a great introduction if you've never cooked before. I did laugh out loud when I saw the directions on how to scramble, fry or boil eggs...so it really is a novice book. Best thing I made was the stir-fry, using soy sauce and ketchup! And one of the recipes for tequila fish by microwave, I would probably make again in the oven.br /br /One tip: as someone who favors 'plain' food, some of the things I cooked from this were on the bland side, so I would experiment with your seasoning as you go through the recipes. I gave it 4 stars because that's a minor detail...everyone should season as they go.

The Pea Lentil Cookbook: From Everyday to Gourmet



I was anxious to get this book so I purchased it directly from the Pea Council, rather than a reseller on Amazon, at less than half the reseller's price. I am so glad I did -- I am really surprised how a "niche" book like one involving dried peas, chickpeas and lentils could be so varied and comprehensive, and yet it is. This is an *excellent* cookbook for both vegetarians and meat eaters alike, with many "I could have had a V8" moments when I realized how many different dishes could have lentils easily incorporated. Further, it gave me the great idea to immediately cook and puree a batch of lentils, to have the puree on hand for numerous baked recipes. I've had banana lentil muffins before and you'd be surprised how delicious they are, so when I saw an entire chapter of baked goods calling for pureed lentils, I knew I'd hit the jackpot. This was a really, really good buy for me. The reseller's price on Amazon (as of 2010) is , but I just bought it new, from the Pea Council, for and some change.

I have this book for a month now and tried only 3 recipes. They were all great, by the way! HOWEVER, IF you are knew to cooking Gluten Free such as myself this book is a little overwhelming. If you are an experienced GF cook than you will love it. My toddler is celiac and I suspect my husband and baby are too. So we decided the whole family will be gluten free. I needed cook books and Hangman were recommended to me by another celiac mom. I like the books very much but there are several things I wish were different:br /br /-Updated! They were written at least 7-8 years ago. Several recipes call for things that substitute what we have today such as GF oatmeal. I'm not a pro so I don't know how to change the recipe using the GF oatmeal. br /-Easy to go through the recipes. You kind of have to read like a book or you may be a little lost. In my opinion, I wish it was easier to go through it and find recipes. br /-No pictures :( ! So it's hard to think of the end product or desire to cook it.br /br /I mostly wanted a simple and easy book to cook for my little kids. I like this book and I know I will cook a lot of her recipes specially as my children gets older and less fussy. br /br /Overall, the only 3 recipes I tried took me a long time since I'm brand knew to GF cooking but my family enjoyed them very much!

I am the kind of cook who routinely misreads tbl. for tsp., wonders how long "browning" should take (and keeps poking to see what the underside looks like), and tries to substitute ingredients--all with disasterous results. The Basic Gourmet has been a lifesaver for me in this regard: it tells me exactly what I need to know when I need to know it, and it doesn't leave me guessing or, god forbid, interpreting.pThe book's first section lists and discusses equipment in detail, setting a teacherly--not bossy or condescending--tone that continues throughout its many delicious recipes, each of which is followed by tidbits such as when you might want to substitute one herb for another, what might make a good accompaniment, etc. The book is detailed and packed full of tips and suggestions, but it doesn't bury the information so that a beginning cook can't see the forrest for the trees. From scrambled eggs and omlet flipping techniques to stuffed pork chops, this cookbook covers all the basics while managing to treat its readers like the potential gourmands they are: even the scrambled egg recipe makes me feel like I'm sitting down to really appreciate a meal rather than taking baby steps or just "making do" for dinner that night. The authors anticipate common mistakes and questions, explain their terminology, give a range of preferred options for altering a recipe, and, best of all, have included all the information you need for each recipe with the recipe itself--not in an index or introductory section somewhere else in the book. pI love my Joy of Cooking, and I refer to it and the Silver Palate often, but this is the cookbook that I learned from and to which I regularly return.
