The Frugal Gourmet Cooks Italian

The Frugal Gourmet' Jeff Smith does Italians proud with this authentic Italian cook book! My last name is Carbonara (like the famous dish) and I am a stickler for authentic Italian cuisine. I am glad I had the forethought to make sure I asked my 'Nana' for her delicious recipes before she passed away many years ago. Although I miss her dearly, I can still feel her presence when I make her wonderful dishes for my family and especially at family holiday functions! This is an excellent cook book for everyone, but especially for those who may not have been fortunate enough to have an Italian Nana to ask for those special recipes. Jeff Smith has another winner here! It's full of great recipes and stories by a very talented cook and writer. This one focuses on Italian cooking. I have used many of these recipes and found them to be very good. Being a home grown cook myself and having had many of my grandmother's classic recipes handed down to me, I found this book to be very helpful in expanding my culinary taste buds. br /br /Jeff Smith entertained us for years on his PBS program 'The Frugal Gourmet'. Not only did he teach us many savory dishes, he also educated us. Not satisfied with just cooking delicious meals for his viewers, he would give detailed history lessons about the origins of the dish and made it all a lot of fun! br /br /This may be Mr. Smiths best cook book and it is a worthy edition to everyone's cook book library. I own and have read many, if not all of his cook books, not only for the man's knowledge of cooking, but his incredible wit! This guy was funny and I would have loved to have hung out and throw a few beers down with him. br /br /Unfortunately, this man had some very seriously bad press released about his personal life and well..... I am not one to spread rumors.....he seemed like a great guy and sadly he died before he was able to clear his name. br /br /R.I.P. Frugs!

Passion on a Plate: EASY and Affordable Gourmet

I would be the last person my friends would expect to buy a cookbook, but after seeing a copy of this someone else had, I rushed to get it. Not only are the recipes great, but for someone who is not a regular cook, I found it incredibly user friendly. For each recipe, the author recommends a cooking gadget to help make the recipe easier. My favorite recipe is the Cinnamon Raisin Stuffed French Toast Casserole. Oh my goodness! It was amazing. I could have eaten the entire thing all by myself. I know this sounds crazy, but I love the index. It's organized by ingredient; I thought that this is very clever. If I have left over bell peppers from one recipe, I can see other recipes in which I can use them up. I also like all of the little details in the book which just make it fun to look at and read. It has a charming retro design elements, but it still seems modern and fresh. The author also has little anecdotes about her life and cooking. Those make it feel so incredibly personal. I loved this cookbook so much that all four of my sisters-in-law are getting a copy. I hope they don't read this review before Christmas!

Everyday Epicurean

I bought this book in New Zealand when first published here and have cooked many times from the book. The recipes are very easy and also easy to change by substituting ingredients if you want. There is something for everyone - some for when you aren't worried about calories, like the chicken and spinach phyllo pie which is just delicious, and others which are suitable for people watching their weight like the tunisian fish tagine. I have made the grissini - so much nicer than bought ones out of a packet. Other favourites are courgettes (zuchini) with basil and pecorino romano cheese, coriander (cilantro) chili rice with chicken, lamb with orzo and a spiced tomato sauce and chermoula fish with chickpea pasta (which I usually make with chicken breasts). The writing is clear and the focus is on using really good ingredients for great home cooked meals. Catherine Bell's philosophy is based around if you want fine restaurant food, go to a restaurant. If you want good food you can share with family and friends, this is the book for you.

Glamour's Gourmet on the Run

When I finally decided I needed to be able to cook for myself rather than relying on take-out and frozen entrees, I talked to some friends who live on their own home cooking and said, "Where do I start?" I laughed when they pulled out a Glamour cookbook, but they were insistent, so I checked out used books and secured a copy. I'm sold - BEST COOKBOOK EVER! There are enough quick recipes for the single cook to have me sitting down to chicken marsala as quickly as I can heat up a pizza. There are also an ample number of recipes for entertaining. All of them are manageable for a novice cook (plus there are instructions for more complicated tasks). I supplied a potluck picnic with a raspberry tart and some white wine sangria from this book and got rave reviews. In the early going, it felt like I was buying tons of stuff I didn't normally have to hand, but I'm beginning to build up a pantry that enables me to whip something together when I feel like there's nothing to eat in the house. My successes with this cookbook have made me more willing to try other recipes that used to look too intimidating. I'm here now looking to get more copies for my friends who are making the transition to cooking for themselves. Totally a worthwhile investment, and I agree, it should be reprinted!

From Kitchen to Market: Selling Your Gourmet Food Specialty

Stephen Hall's book is a honest guide for aspiring food manufacturers who are new to the specialty food industry, and most importantly, who have limited funds to sustain a long-term marketing effort. Though he does discuss various important aspects of the industry as a whole, his emphasis is on marketing.br /br /He uses real-world examples of entrepreneurs that have either succeeded or failed in bringing their product(s) to market and in some cases due to being under-capitalised or not being prepared to handle the demand for their products once they had become successful. Make no mistake, Mr. Hall in no way sugarcoats the process. In fact, in the chapter where he discusses start-up costs, he stresses the importance of an independent source of income to successfully start your business, especially for the first 3-5 years. But this a positive rather than a negative point, because it encourages you to be realistic and to prepare for success rather than set yourself up for failure. br /br /His intention is to inform and he does so clearly by using flowcharts and explaining indepth the various aspects of the specialty food market. He covers important issues such as defining the best U.S. territories for your product; researching the markets; developing and positioning your product; government regulations (a list of the relevant agencies for each process of the business is provided); packaging, labeling, pricing, warehousing and shipping your product; principles for marketing success; promoting, publicizing and advertising; finding buyers; arranging deals; finding copackers, and much more.br /br /There is a lot of valuable information to process and I found myself reading the book a second time (and most likely will do so a third time as a refresher). I highly recommend this book as a good foundation and to get you started in the right direction.

The Gourmet Toaster Oven: Simple and Sophisticated Meals for the Busy Cook

"Gourmet" and "Toaster Oven" in the same title? You bet! I usually don't review cookbooks unless I feel they are special enough to encourage others to purchase them, and this one I recommend highly.br /br /My family has downsized but my cooking enthusiasm has not and I am entertaining more often but with smaller guest lists. Heating up a gas oven for a small quiche to feed four seems a waste of energy (the planet's and my own) and time (my large toaster oven takes four minutes to reach 400 degrees: my oven, almost 15.) Also, with most recipes in the book serving 2-4, there is not the problem of reducing larger recipes and the resulting dreaded calculations. Quality ingredients well combined and engagingly presented replace long grocery lists and too many leftovers for a small family, singles, empty-nesters and the diet conscious (I mean, who of us really wants that chocolate cheesecake that serves 8 sitting temptingly in the 'frige after a dinner for 2-4?!)br /br /The book itself is a quality paperback, large enough for lovely photos, a brief description of the recipe and suggestions, as well as print that is easy to read. br /br /Well organized, with a good index, the book is divided into five sections, (as well as an informative description of toaster ovens and their features) which makes finding a recipe quick and easy. And, sit down for this, there are even wine suggestions for many of recipes...from toaster-oven cooking! Too cool.br /br /The recipe chapters are: Breakfast, Lunch, Appetizers and Sides, Dinner and Tea and Goodies. Short lists of commonly available ingredients make it easy to take a basic recipe and imagine many substitutions for variety and what is available in your larder. br /br /The Herbed Oven-Fried Chicken, Quiche Lorraine, Artisan Whole Wheat-Walnut Loaf, Banana-Walnut Muffins, Savory Cheesecakes (yup, that's what I said), Turkey, Tarragon, and Apple Meatloaf, Chocolate Lava Cakes...if I have to pick "favorites" these are just super. Yes, you can probably find similar recipes in your cookbook collection, but again, you don't have to do the arithmetic. I guarantee that no one will associate that toaster oven sitting innocently on your kitchen counter as the source of these lovely dishes. And you don't have to tell them, you know. br /br /Of course, you will have to re-think baking pans, casserole dishes, etc. for these smaller amounts, but I have found some lovely and very useful such items on sale in most all places that carry cookware. Besides, if you are a true "foodie" imagine how happy your friends and relatives will be to have something new to give you for birthdays and holidays! And, think of all the room you can free up in your kitchen (large baking pans and huge casseroles can be stored under the bed with those "extra cookbooks"...well, it works for me!)br /br /br /br /

The Gourmet Toaster Oven: Simple and Sophisticated Meals for the Busy Cook Feature

The Gourmet Toaster Oven: Simple and Sophisticated Meals for the Busy Cook Overview

Toaster ovens aren’t just for browning your bagel or warming up frozen pizza anymore. Lynn Alley, author of THE GOURMET SLOW COOKER, is earning a name for herself by finding unconventional and imaginative ways to prepare gourmet meals at home. In THE GOURMET TOASTER OVEN, she reveals why toaster ovens are ideal for creating simple yet sophisticated meals: they take up less space, use less energy, preheat quickly, and are cheaper than convection ovens. They also let you cook small meals more efficiently and provide additional oven space for side dishes when cooking a large meal. In this beautifully photographed book, Alley offers 50 breakfast, lunch, appetizer, dinner, and goodie recipes designed to serve two, promising incredible meals hot out of your (toaster) oven.

The New York Times 60-Minute Gourmet

This is one of my all time favorite cookbooks. I bought it after moving out on my own and realizing I needed to learn how to cook something more than pre-made sauces and hamburger helper. It is still one of the most used cookbooks on my shelf, and I own over thirty cookbooks. I needed to buy a new copy because the one I have is slowly falling apart from constant use. So my thanks go out to the publisher for releasing this wonderful treasure. The best feature of this book is that each entre comes with a suggested side dish. This is helpful to beginners who aren't sure yet what goes with what. It takes some of the pressure off of needing to figure everything out all at once. The other wonderful thing about this book is that the recipes result in meals that are a pleasure even to the most advanced gourmets. I recommend this book to anyone interested in cooking great meals at home for themselves as well as for thier friends and family.

The New York Times 60-Minute Gourmet Feature

The New York Times 60-Minute Gourmet Overview

bA Master Chef's Signature Book/bbrAvailable in paperback for the first time in a decade, bThe New York Times 60-Minute Gourmet/b is the bestselling cookbook that catapulted Pierre Franey into the front ranks of American chefs. After a successful career as a restaurant chef, Franey became a food writer for iThe New York Times/i in 1975, accepting the challenge to write a regular column featuring recipes that would take less than an hour to prepare. Through his column and the cookbooks that soon followed, Franey created a national sensation with his revolutionary style of cooking, and American kitchens haven't been the same since. The presentation of quick, healthy, and enjoyable meals was a revelation, introducing the home cook to choices beyond spending hours in the kitchen or settling for "fast food." This cookbook -- the first that collected his New York Times recipes -- captures all that was great about Pierre Franey's cooking: fresh, flavorful, low-fat ingredients, ease of preparation, and the injunction "Don't spend all evening in the kitchen!" As a step-by-step guide to better cooking and delicious eating, this great cookbook allows all cooks to employ Pierre Franey's signature methods and create memorable meals in their own homes.br

Kay Ewing's Cooking School Cookbook

I have both of Kay Ewing's cookbooks. I use them on a very regular basis. My entire family loves to eat these recipes. I can disguise eggplant and zucchini in the sauce of the Chicken Melanzana recipe. I can quickly prepare a dish from the Young Everyday Gourmet section or the Quick and Easy section. I can't list all of my favorite recipes because it would take way too long. If you could see the splatters on my pages you would understand how often this book is used in my kitchen. I cook a meal every night for our family dinners. With three young children it is nice to know that I can do a sensational meal without spending the whole day preparing in the kitchen. The book is set up perfectly by themes (from her cooking classes) and menus within each theme. If I'm entertaining I would do an entire menu, but for a weeknight meal maybe just the entree and a salad. I have hundreds of cookbooks and this is my favorite (her second cookbook is neck in neck with this one). I have always wowed our company and everyone thinks I am a gourmet cook. It is all thanks to Kay!
